SCARE project launch in Senegal

30 April 2021 saw the launch of the SCARE project in Senegal. This is the first of four national in-country launches. A great success with high level, high quality participation, the Senegal event provided a forum for key stakeholders to discuss how the project seeks to understand linkages between sanitation services and climate change, focusing on GHG emissions from on-site sanitation facilities which account for nearly 80% of emissions of sanitation services in Senegal according to a GGGI report from 2020.

Stakeholders included Omar Sene the DA of sanitation, Libasse Ba from COMNAC (committee for climate change for Senegal) representative of Senegals Mayors association and the Mayors of Tivouane and Koalack where the study will be carried out, Senegals National research institute (IRD) and other strong voices in the sanitation sector notably Dr. Becaye from DELVIC among other key figures.

The main elements of the project were detailed at the event and there followed questions from nearly all participants, who were very engaged in the discussions. Key stakeholders were generally supportive, in particular applauding the ‘low-cost’ approach on site initiative. The draft methodology has been circulated for further feedback from participants and their colleagues.

The Senegal SCARE project launch has been covered in a number of places including:
