Sanitation and Climate: Assessing Resilience and Emissions (SCARE) project launches virtually in Nepal
A virtual launch of the SCARE project was held on 25 May 2021 under the chairmanship of Ministry of Water Supply (MOWS) and in coordination with the Ministry of Forests and Environment (MOFE), University of Bristol and the consortium partners in Nepal: Kathmandu University and Global Green Growth Institute.
The event was facilitated by Mr. Yogendra Chitrakar, Senior Divisional Engineer, Ministry of Water Supply with a welcome address by Mr. Tiresh Prasad Khatri, Director General, Department of Water Supply and Sewerage Management (DWSSM) and Rowan Fraser (GGGI). The introduction was followed by a Keynote from Mr. Raju Sapkota, Under Secretary, Ministry of Forest and Environment on Defining Climate Change and its approach from country context and a presentation on Climate Change and WASH by Dr. Rajit Ojha, Senior Divisional Engineer, Department of Water Supply and Sewerage Management
After presentations summarising the SCARE project objectives and methods by Prof Guy Howard (University of Bristol), Prof Subodh Sharma (Kathmandu University) and Luna K. Kansakar (GGGI) there followed engaging discussions amongst participants with closing session remarks by Mr. Kalanidhi Devkota, Executive Secretary, Municipal Association of Nepal (MUAN) and Mr. Sunil Kumar Das, Joint Secretary. Ministry of Water Supply.
The event was very well attended, with participation from over 45 representatives across federal government, local government officials and mayors, development partners including the World Bank, WHO and UNICEF, and several private sector representatives. Stakeholders contributed with enthusiasm and strong expressions of support, with several putting forward suggestions and offering feedback which will help shape the projects direction in the forthcoming years.
